  1. Russian state news agencies accused FIFA and the U.S. of corruption

    Reporting by Russian state news agencies, including RT, TASS, and RIA Novosti, and pro-Kremlin outlets, including Tsargrad, Izvestia, and Vzglyad, featured claims like, "It was almost inevitable that Trump would find a way to interfere in the World Cup." They accused FIFA and the U.S. of corruption and undermining sport’s political neutrality. They also amplified criticism, such as by the Union of European Football Associations, and reports that the Belgian Football Association was considering filing a complaint against FIFA.

  2. Trump's intervention called a scandal

    Antifashist, an outlet the U.S. government has linked to Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) called the news a “scandal” caused by Trump “personally canceling the suspension of a U.S. national team player.”

  3. Claims by pro-Kremlin Telegram channels amplified

    Portal Kombat websites republished content from pro-Kremlin Telegram channels and the Russian social media platform MAX, falsely claiming that FIFA had canceled a red card “for the first time in history.” They also shared memes depicting the suspended player and Trump.

  4. Pro-Kremlin accounts quote Trump's post

    Pro-Kremlin accounts on X, Telegram, and Facebook drew attention to the news and corruption narrative. They quoted Trump's Truth Social post thanking FIFA for "doing what was right" in reversing Balogun's suspension.
